From Laid Off to Hired: My Path to a New Role

Finding a new job in the current market is not an easy task and is often dependent on a hefty dose of luck. So I feel extraordinarily lucky to be able to share that I have accepted a new position with EBSCO as a Senior Customer Training Specialist.

I recently wrote about my experience with being laid off, a first in my nearly ten-year career. I wouldn’t wish the uncertainty and emotional strain of suddenly finding yourself without a job on anyone. The sudden relief I felt upon receiving the offer letter was almost indescribable.

I’ve read story after story about accomplished professionals who spend years submitting hundreds of applications without getting so much as an interview. My sense of dread increased with every headline. I can still hardly believe that I only had to submit thirty applications and complete three interviews before I received a job offer.

I am immensely grateful to those who supported me after the funding for NNLM Region 5 was terminated. The outpouring of sympathy and well-wishes was incredibly appreciated and went a long way towards buoying my spirits.

As much as I loved working with my NNLM colleagues, especially the team at Region 5, I am excited to start this new journey at EBSCO. This position will be a fantastic opportunity to combine my search expertise with my love of teaching, something I haven’t had a chance to do in a long time. Working in the private sector will be a new experience, and I’m looking forward to navigating this new world with the wonderful team at EBSCO.

Once again, the universe has reminded me that making a long-term plan for the future is a fool’s game. After a career spent in public institutions, I never could have predicted that I would work for an information services company. I can’t wait to see where this new opportunity will take me!
